Every August, Animal Care and Protective Services (ACPS) joins hundreds of shelters nationwide for Clear the Shelters, an adoption and donation campaign that has helped nearly 1.2 million pets find homes since 2015.
Led by NBCUniversal Local, Clear the Shelters brings together more than 1,600 animal shelters and rescues from across the country. Last year, this event helped nearly 170,000 animals find their forever families.
This August, ACPS is encouraging the community to adopt, donate, and spread the word to help more pets find homes.
Your support helps provide medical care, vaccinations, microchipping, and spay/neuter surgeries, giving more animals a second chance. Whether you adopt, donate, or share available pets, every action helps save lives and create more happy endings.

5,137!Dogs Treated for Heartworm with help from donors like you
Why is your FOJA donation so vital? A recent adopter of a heartworm-positive pup explains it in her own words. Animal Care and Protective Services (ACPS) volunteer Kelly Colon Usery has a beautiful story to share about Lottie.
“I’ve loved her since the day I met her. We met through the Dog Day Out program at ACPS and I fell in love with her playful puppy-like disposition, cute floppy ears and the way she just relished the opportunity to be a dog---smelling all the smells, rolling in the grass, soaking up the love and attention from everyone we met that day.
“I couldn’t stop thinking about her so a few weeks later, I began a holiday season foster. What began as a temporary shelter break for her quickly changed. Although my goal was to market her on social media to find her a forever home, it soon became clear that she’d already found it! It didn’t take long for my husband and son to fall in love with her, too, and she became fast friends with my dogs (3-year-old Schooner and 2.5-year-old Sailor, both of whom we’ve had since they were puppies) and even my 17-year-old cat Spot. Shortly after the new year we made it official and adopted her!
“This sweet girl, my little wild child, is ALL love. Meeting Lottie, falling in love with her, and welcoming her into my family has brought me so much joy, and I’m so grateful to FOJA for sponsoring her heartworm treatment so she can keep living her best life!”
